Hello readers,
So what happens after plastic surgery? Being a plastic surgeon it has many perks and peeves attached to it. It never fails to be a conversation starter when someone asks what I do for a living. What this also means, is that I often have to clear misconceptions that people may have about this field.
One of the most common things I hear from people is
‘I don’t understand how someone could undergo plastic surgery and look so fake’
Its a valid statement as unfortunately, there are many people (including celebrities) who are not good advertisements for plastic surgery. Faces look stretched, breasts and buttocks look gigantic, lips look huge etc.
What I would say is, that these people represent maybe 5 per cent of all cosmetic surgery patients. They represent those whose surgeon did not know what he was doing, or know exactly what he was doing..i.e those patients wanted that look.
I tell my patients that the best plastic surgery is when you never know after plastic surgery is done. I view my procedure as a success if people go
‘hey you look nice, I don’t know what it is’
Not if they go and ask you after plastic surgery
‘have you had a nose job‘
Finding the balance
Obviously, this means that it is important to strike a balance of making a change that improves someone’s features without venturing into the territory where it looks fake. And that line can be difficult to find sometimes, especially if someone is inexperienced.
Coming back to celebrities who obviously look like they’ve had work done. Sometimes that is exactly the look they are going for. Some places in the world, eg: Miami, Los Angeles, Colombia, that is the norm. The idea is to be in your face and not subtle.
However, in most other places, India included, the aim is for a more gentler natural look which is what is most commonly done, and most people don’t even know about it.
You might obviously ask
‘if people don’t know about it, why do it’
This is because you should consider a cosmetic procedure for your own satisfaction and no one else’s. The idea of cosmetic surgery is to improve your confidence.
So don’t be bogged down by the misconception that all plastic surgery looks fake. In fact, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Most people are looking for subtle natural results and that’s what most surgeons aim to provide.
