Tonsils are structures present in the back of the throat on either side. They are normally present in children below 8 years of age and are responsible for immunity and fighting infections in children. They slowly regress in size as the child grows. In some individuals, they may be enlarged even in adulthood.

What is tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is an inflammation or infection of the tonsils, which are two oval-shaped tissues located at the back of the throat. When these tonsils get infected it is known as tonsillitis. The patient usually presents with fever, throat pain, pain while swallowing, and difficulty in swallowing.

On looking at the back of the throat, one may see enlarged pink masses with white/yellow pus points on either side of the back of the throat.

Tonsillitis Treatment?

To begin, the patient is given a course of oral antibiotics and painkillers. Fever is also treated with antipyretic drugs. Though the patient has pain while swallowing, he is encouraged to take a soft, cold diet and lots of fluids.

If tonsillitis doesn’t come down with these measures, the patient will require intravenous antibiotics and intravenous drugs for pain and fever. This can be done after admission for 2-3 days.

Understanding the Causes of Tonsilitis

Tonsillitis, an inflammation of the tonsils, is a common ENT issue addressed at the Venkat Center. Our team is dedicated to educating patients about the causes of tonsillitis, empowering them with the knowledge to prevent recurrence. Tonsillitis is typically caused by viral or bacterial infections, including the common cold, influenza, and streptococcus bacteria. Factors such as age, exposure to germs, and immune system status can increase the risk of tonsillitis. At Venkat Center, we are committed to providing comprehensive information, preventative measures, and treatments to combat the causes of tonsillitis.

What is a tonsillectomy?

Tonsillectomy is a surgical process of tonsillitis treatment to remove the tonsils. It is an absolutely safe procedure that is done under general anaesthesia. There are newer techniques available now called coblation tonsillectomy that remove the tonsils with very minimal bleeding. The procedure can be done as a daycare surgery or may require admission for 1 day.

What is the recovery after tonsillectomy?

He can begin taking a cold and soft diet a couple of hours after the surgery. It will be pain while swallowing, but the faster the patient begins to swallow, the faster the pain goes away.

What are the indications of tonsillectomy?

In an adult who has 3-4 episodes of tonsillitis per year, which requires hospital admission and intravenous antibiotics, it is advisable to get the tonsils removed. Tonsillectomy in adults is absolutely safe and does not recur.

In children, if the tonsils don’t regress in size even after 8 years of age and cause symptoms like snoring, difficulty breathing, and recurrent episodes of throat pain, then it is advisable to get the tonsils removed. The tonsillectomy procedure is not done when the patient has an active throat infection. Usually, we wait for a 6-week period after tonsillitis subsides to perform a tonsillectomy.
