We are happy to share Dr. Aniketh’s recent article on “Clinical implications of Gluteal Fat Graft Migration: A Dynamic Anatomical Study” in PRS (Plastic and Reconstructive surgery), the premier journal in the field of plastic surgery.
Why was this study needed?
Buttock augmentation is the fastest growing cosmetic surgery procedure in the USA. The BBL procedure has been in the news recently because of fatalities that have occurred with this procedure, hence safety in Brazilian butt lift becomes an important aspect to consider.
Dr. Aniketh was part of a team led by Dr. Dan Delvecchio and Dr. Rod Rohrich in Dallas, Texas to determine the cause of these deaths and to evaluate how this surgery can be done safely.
What does this study prove?
Till date, every case of death from brazilian butt lift has occurred when fat was placed into the muscle. During the study, it was found that when fat was placed in the muscle it could find its way deeper and enter major veins which could then travel to the lungs causing pulmonary emboli. With this study it was proven beyond doubt that this technique is dangerous. Placing fat only in the subcutaneous tissue is safe as the fat cannot enter veins. There has been no death in buttock augmentation when fat was placed only in the subcutaneous tissue.
This is a landmark paper in the field of cosmetic surgery (more specifically safety in Brazilian butt lift) and if critical to establish the safety of this procedure and prevent future deaths
