Recently, I received a testimonial video from one of my rhinoplasty patients, and it really really touched me. She spoke about how she felt like a different person after the procedure, and how she felt so much more confident. Whats more, you could even see it on her face. There was just a glow, and the smile was a little larger than it was before.
Rhinoplasty can truly be a life changing surgery this way. Often times people have a tendency to dismiss it and other such surgeries as vanity surgery. Something that is unnecessary. It is easy to discount the emotional aspect of such surgeries.
Imagine being teased over some physical appearance of yours during your childhood. Or even if you arent fully teased, just offhand comments on your appearance. That can leave emotional scars that may never fully heal. People can feel limited over this one part of their appearance. Which is why when that is treated, they can appear almost like a whole new person.
I always say the job of a nose is to look inconspicuous. There are peoms and love songs written about the eyes, the lips, the hair….. but never the nose
On the other hand if your nose is large, or out of shape, it is often the only thing people notice. No matter how pretty your eyes or lips.
This might explain why such a small change in ones appearance can lead to such a dramatic improvement in ones self image. And as a plastic surgeon, nothing gives me more happiness than the feeling Ive positively impacted someones life.
The point im trying to make is, these procedures are not purely cosmetic. They can have as big an impact on someones life as any other non cosmetic surgery. We shouldnt judge others for their choices, when we havent walked in their shoes.
