What is otoplasty? Ear correction or otoplasty is the name given for any surgery to reshape the ear. Ear correction surgery shapes the skin and cartilage behind the ear so that it is pulled back to look less prominent. This operation can be performed from the age of 6 years and upwards. Approximately 5% of the population is affected by this affliction.
The most common reason for otoplasty is to correct prominent ears, also known as bat ears or lop ears.
Who needs otoplasty?
Ears that stick out too far are often the focus of ridicule. While these are considered lucky in some cultures, they can be a source of psychological trauma. Children tease each other and can sometimes be extremely cruel. Adults may choose this operation because they want to balance their facial appearance. The operation can be performed under a general anaesthetic or a local anaesthetic.
Transforming Prominent Ears with Surgery | Otoplasty in Bangalore at Venkat Center
Why are some ears prominent?
There are many reasons for prominent ears
- Commonly, the folds of the ear aren’t properly formed during development
- There can be excessive cartilage in the ear
- The ear cartilage might not attach to the skull snugly
What does ear correction surgery involve?
- The procedure is done under local anaesthesia as an outpatient procedure.
- Each anatomical problem requires its own individual solution.
- A small incision is usually made, under a local anaesthetic, just behind the ear.
- This allows the surgeon to correct the position and the shape of the ear cartilage with sutures.
- Folds are created if they are absent
- Excess cartilage is removed as needed
- Sutures are taken to attach the ear to the skull
Post-Procedure Recovery
- After the procedure, you will need to wear an elastic bandage for a few days. This timing varies from patient to patient. With other ear or earlobe corrections, it is usually not necessary.
- The ear might look swollen for a few weeks after the operation, which can make it difficult to tell if the operation has been a success. Within two months of the operation, all the swelling will have gone down so you can see the final result better.
- The scarring is minimal and fades with time.
