The word microdermabrasion is derived from two words ‘derma’ meaning skin, and ‘abrasion’ meaning wearing away. The term literally means ‘scraping of skin on a microscopic scale’. Now, we use medical grade aluminium oxide crystals under high pressure, or a diamond tip along with suction to remove dead skin cells to give the skin a bright, radiant glow. This procedure is also known as ‘skin polishing’, as it exfoliates the superficial layer of skin, smoothens it, and because of this process skin appears to glow and feels younger. Diamond tips are easier to use, as they have less irritation potential and no crystals are deposited around the mouth, nose and eyes.
What Are the Benefits of Microdermabrasion?
- Exfoliates dead skin cells
- Improves skin texture and elasticity – rejuvenation and reverses early signs of ageing
- Lightens pigmentation and age spots, improves uneven skin tone and ‘dyschromia’ (an alteration in the colour of skin)
- Opens up clogged pores
- Softens fine lines and wrinkles
- Mild effect on superficial acne scars
How Many Sessions Are Needed?
- Multiple sessions ranging anywhere between four and six sessions at two-to-four-week intervals are required to show an improvement in skin characteristics like texture, elasticity and reduced pigmentation.
- For stretch marks, anywhere between 10 and 20 sessions, 1 month apart, have exhibited a few benefits.
What Are the Advantages of Microdermabrasion?
- Inexpensive and safe
- Non-invasive and painless in-office procedure. The procedure takes 15 to 30 minutes for a single session.
- There is no downtime, however Transient erythema (reddening of the skin) as a result of the procedure
- No anesthesia is required
- Individuals with any skin type can undergo microdermabrasion
- Can be combined with other skin procedures such as a chemical peel and lasers for scars
What Are the Disadvantages of Microdermabrasion?
- The effects of this procedure are mild and not long lasting
- Repeated sessions are recommended
Precautions after Microdermabrasion
Skin remains sensitive for 24-48 hours after microdermabrasion; use of broad-spectrum sunscreen is advised.
Sometimes we also use a process called ‘hydradermabrasion’ or ‘hydrafacial’, in which aqueous solutions, involving water and serums are sprayed on to the skin at supersonic speed, and this process is used to abrade the superficial dead skin cells. At The Venkat Centre, microdermabrasion is performed only by trained dermatologists making it a safe, effective and comfortable experience.
In conclusion, microdermabrasion is one of the safest procedures that can be performed even close to an event or function, in addition to the procedure being less expensive and simple.
