Fat located in any area of the body, especially the abdomen, hips, and breasts (particularly in men) and under the chin is often resistant to diet or exercise. Similarly, after pregnancy, the fat on the abdomen and hips may persist despite concerted efforts at dieting and exercising. Further, localised accumulations of fat are often inherited and frequently impossible to eliminate by exercise or dieting.
Do you need liposuction?
After the age of 30, an individual often gains fat according to a genetically predetermined pattern. For these people, liposuction is the only realistic means of significantly changing the body’s silhouette. In effect, liposuction is equivalent to being able to focus on the effects of dieting on specific areas of the body.
Why is some fat resistant to exercise?
Any fat in the body has two kinds of hormone receptors- those for fat-burning hormones and those for fat-storing hormones. Some areas of fat have more receptors for fat-burning hormones- these respond well to exercise. Other areas have more receptors for fat-storing hormones- these respond poorly to exercise. The amount of exercise needed to burn this fat is not possible for people with jobs and other activities, which is why this kind of fat loss is seen in actors and athletes who have the time and money needed for this kind of exercise. This fat is ideally suited for liposuction.
What are the common areas in which liposuction is useful?
The most frequently treated areas in women are the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, and knees.

In men, the love handles (flanks), abdomen, and enlarged male breasts (gynecomastia) are most often treated.
Other areas treated include the arms, neck, and face. Interestingly, sweat glands in the underarm can be removed by liposuction to reduce excessive sweating. Chin is another area which can be treated by liposuction in both men and women. In women, large breasts can also be reduced in size by liposuction.
In men, high-definition liposuction is done over the abdomen to increase muscle definition.
Who is a good candidate for liposuction?
The best candidates are those in good health, have localised deposits of fat, are not grossly obese, and have realistic expectations of what liposuction can accomplish. Liposuction can provide a good candidate with significant improvement. It should be noted that like any cosmetic procedure, patients should not expect to achieve perfection. There is no definite age or weight limit for undergoing liposuction. A good candidate usually has one or more localised accumulations of fat that can be removed by liposuction.
For high-definition liposuction, the patient should have a good muscle tone and a relatively smaller amount of fat. The aim is to show the underlying muscle and not to create an artificial six-pack out of fat that looks fake.
Who is not a good candidate for liposuction?
A person who expects absolute perfection is not a good candidate for liposuction. Excessively obese patients are usually not good candidates for liposuction, as they can not get satisfactory results in any area and multiple sessions are needed to get good results. A person who has a serious systemic medical problem such as diabetes, hypertension etc is not a good candidate for liposuction.

How much fat can be removed in one session?
The maximum amount of fat that can be removed safely is probably about 5-6 litres, equal to about 5-6 kgs. Removal of large amounts of fat such as 10-12 kgs is associated with the risk of serious complications. If a patient requires more than 5-6 kgs of fat to be removed, it is safer to do this in two separate sessions in intervals of 1-3 weeks.
What is awake liposuction? Why Awake Liposuction is recommended?
Awake Liposuction is the concept of doing the liposuction procedure while the patient is awake & not unconscious (without general anaesthesia). For Awake Liposuction, local anaesthesia is used instead of general anaesthesia. Under general anaesthesia, the patient will be completely unconscious. Local anaesthesia is the technique of giving anaesthesia to that part of the body where the surgery is being done. Only the area where the anaesthesia is given becomes numb. Due to this, the patient is conscious and awake during the procedure. Traditionally, local anaesthesia could only be given for small areas such as removing a small swelling. However, the advent of a newer technique called tumescent local anesthesia, allows this to be given for a large area. This makes Awake Liposuction possible and also a safe method when compared to Liposuction under general anaesthesia.
