What is Deviated Septum?
Septum is the structure present in the centre of the nose. It is made up of bone and cartilage. If the septum doesn’t lie in the center of the nose and is either deviated to the left or the right it is called as deviated nasal septum. The Deviated nasal septum surgery is now available at Venkat Center.
Does deviated septum need to be treated?
Just having a deviated nasal septum does not warranty surgery. Something needs to be done about your DNS if it causes one-sided nose block, every day, continuously.
Causes of Deviated Nasal Septum
The nasal septum is the thin wall dividing your nasal passage into two halves. A deviated septum occurs when this wall is not at the center, causing one nasal passage to be smaller than the other. This can occur during fetal development, at birth (congenital), or result from an injury to the nose.
Deviated Nasal Septum Treatment at Venkat Center
At Venkat Center, our team of ENT specialists offers a variety of treatments based on the severity of the deviation and its impact on your quality of life. In cases where the deviation is causing significant issues, septoplasty, a surgical procedure to straighten the septum, might be recommended. Septoplasty involves removing part of the bone or cartilage that is deviated and relieving the nose block. It is a simple and short procedure that takes around 1-2 hours and is done under general anesthesia.
Deviated Nasal Septum Surgery
Septoplasty (deviated septum) surgery can be done as a day care procedure where the patient goes home the same evening or the patient stays overnight at the hospital for 1 day. A nasal pack may be placed inside the nose for 1-2 days. This is mainly done to prevent any subsequent bleeding. While the nasal pack is in place the patient may have minimal pain, nose block, blood stained nasal discharge, minimal watering from the eyes and occasional headache.

What is the recovery like?
Once the nasal pack is removed the patient can go home. He should avoid sleeping on his nose and avoid rubbing the nose for about 1 week after surgery. He should visit his ENT surgeon around 2 weeks after the surgery for an endoscopic cleaning of the nose.
Can this procedure be combined with cosmetic rhinoplasty?
Yes, a septoplasty can be done with cosmetic rhinoplasty. In fact, it is better to combine both if you are thinking of cosmetic correction, as the removed septum can be used for various cosmetic improvements.
