People often ask Dr. Aniketh Venkataram about the difference between ‘cool sculpting’ and ‘liposuction. In this video Dr. Aniketh Venkataram explains the difference between cool sculpting and liposuction, two methods of removing unwanted body fat. Let’s start with cool sculpting. Cool sculpting is actually the popular name for a procedure called cryo-lipolysis.
Cryo-lipolysis as the name suggests is a procedure in which the fat is frozen using a machine and this fat tissue once frozen dies, and is then excreted from the body. There is a cool sculpting machine with cups that are placed on the earmarked area where fat needs to be removed.
Once placed on the body the machine produced a suction effect as well as a steady cooling effect, which in turn freezes the fat tissue and hence kills the targeted fat tissue. Cool sculpting is a relatively quick procedure and the patient can leave the treatment facility after the procedure and get back to normalcy within a couple of days.
This procedure is preferred over liposuction mainly because it does not require the use of anaesthesia. However, there are a few drawbacks when referring to cool sculpting.
The procedure is suitable to small areas of the body like a love handle or a bit of fat accumulation under the chin, or what ever area of the body fits the cups associated with the cool sculpting machine. It’s not suitable for larger fat accumulation around the abdomen.
There is also the case of ‘paradoxical adiposal hyperplasia’ a condition in which the adipose tissue is stimulated by the cool sculpting procedure and hence there is an odd accumulation of fat at the targeted area. Dr. Aniketh Venkataram speaks about liposuction.
Liposuction is a procedure in which small 4-millimeter holes are made on the target area into which a needle is inserted to suck out the fat in the desired area.
While speaking about liposuction, Dr. Aniketh Venkataram states how The Venkat Center in Bangalore uses only local anaesthesia for the liposuction procedure as compared to the use of general anaesthesia for the same procedure elsewhere.
There are advantages of using local anaesthesia for the procedure as the patient can be made to stand to check the progress of the procedure and further fat removal can be done for the desired result. Another advantage is that the dressing post the procedure can be done in a standing posture, and further fluid can be squeezed out so the skin sits tightly at the targeted area. When compared, the procedures, cool sculpting and liposuction, do have many differences.
Cool sculpting may sound inviting as a procedure, but it takes many sessions, compared to liposuction, which takes fewer sessions. When it comes to the cost, the common belief is that cool sculpting is less expensive than liposuction, but, owing to more number of sessions in cool sculpting and the consumables in this procedure, it is more expensive than liposuction.
So how does a person decide whether to opt for cool sculpting or liposuction? Dr. Aniketh Venkataram has an answer to this question. There could be a balanced approach in which liposuction will not be done aggressively, and then complement this procedure with cool sculpting, to achieve the desired results.
But it always depends on the quantity of fat and the target area before either cool sculpting or liposuction is prescribed to a patient. To know more visit: https://www.venkatcenter.com/dr-venkat
