Benefits of the Dermaroller

Jump to Heading

What is a Dermaroller?

A ‘Dermaroller’ is a hand-held device with a cylindrical roller at one end made up of 24 circular arrays. Each of these arrays is covered with eight medical grade solid steel microneedles, adding up to a total of 192 needles. The length of each needle is 0.5 – 2mm along with a diameter of 0.1mm.

How does a Dermaroller Work?

Dermarolling is based on physical trauma, or in simpler terms, the idea is to create what is known as a ‘controlled injury’. It has been suggested that the small pores caused by the needle puncturing the skin causes regeneration of the skin. The needles penetrate the superficial layer of dead skin and create small holes.

Once these small holes are made on the skin, this leads to the generation of certain substances in the skin that stimulate the production of ‘collagen’ and ‘elastin’ two essential elements that provide structural support and elasticity to our skin. The natural wound healing process is then started off with the release of multiple growth factors. Finally, this results in the formation of new collagen and healthier as well as younger looking skin.

What are the Benefits of this Treatment?

A dermaroller can be used to treat various disorders related to our skin. To name a few benefits, we can consider:

  • Reducing the size of scars
  • In treating conditions such as alopecia
  • In treating conditions related to pigmentation such as melasma, vitiligo and dark areas under the eyes
  • Improving skin texture and firmness
  • Reducing wrinkles and open pores
  • Delivering drugs to the deeper layers of the skin

What is the Procedure of the Dermaroller Treatment?

  • Is a simple office-based procedure
  • The area to be treated is anesthetized with a topical anaesthetic cream for about 45 minutes to 1 hour
  • After preparing the area, requiring the use of the dermaroller, as in cleaning and exfoliation, the actual rolling is done for about 15 to 20 times in a horizontal, vertical, and in oblique directions
  • Pin-point bleeding needs to be expected and this could be easily controlled
  • After the treatment is complete, the area is moistened with saline pads
  • The time taken for the entire procedure ranges from 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the size and extent of the area to be treated
  • A minimum of 6 weeks is recommended between two treatment sessions as it takes this long for new natural collagen to form

What to Expect After the Procedure?

  • There may be redness in the skin after the treatment and lasts for around 2 to 3 days
  • Photoprotection for a week is advised as a routine
  • Local antibiotic creams may be prescribed
  • Patients can go back to work the very next day
  • As the microholes close immediately, postoperative infections do not occur

What are the Benefits of the Dermaroller Treatment?

  • Well tolerated and accepted by patients
  • Cost-effective
  • Can be done on all skin types
  • Can be done on areas not suitable for peeling or laser resurfacing, such as the area near the eyes

How many Sessions are Necessary?

Based on the reason for choosing this treatment, the number of sessions may vary from 2 to 6, all done with an interval of 4 to 6 weeks.

Can a Dermaroller be Used at Home?

Yes, it can be used at home, as dermarollers with needles measuring less than 0.15 mm are available. Such rollers help in easy drug delivery in the case of substances such as peptides and anti-aging medications, and using a roller also helps in reducing fine lines and pores.

How to use a Dermaroller at Home?

  • It can be used twice a week for up to one hundred times
  • After using the dermaroller, the rollers have to be cleaned in hot tap water and shaken dry
  • Peptide-based roller cleansers are also available

What are the New Techniques of Microneedling?

Recently there are a few new techniques developed such as Dermastap, scalp rollers, automated dermarollers, dermapen and dermafrac are a few of the new techniques when we refer to microneedling.
