Why undergo a beard/ moustache transplant?
For men, a full beard and moustache is a sign of virility & pride. Any lack of the same, at times, might become a source of embarrassment and a blow to self-confidence. Often young men are teased for not being able to grow full facial hair. This can lead to social issues. At times, the beard grows but does not grow uniformly. For these kinds of problems faced, Hair transplantation is a safe & effective way to restore self-confidence in these men helping them enable them to lead a full life.
Who is a candidate for beard and moustache transplant?
There are different reasons why someone would want to undergo facial hair transplant
- Men with hormonal conditions– several hormonal conditions cause a lack of facial hair. In these situations, the underlying condition has to be diagnosed by proper medical examination and tests, and treated first, and then facial hair transplant planned
- Men with poor beard and moustache shape– In this section of patients, there is no hormonal issue, but the natural shape of the facial hair is not to their liking. Unfortunately, this is based on genetics and cannot be changed without surgery. The most common example of these include
- Hair growth on the sides of the face but not the front
- Lack of connection between beard and moustache
- Lack of density in hair growth
- Irregular patchy appearance
- Men with scars: Sometimes scars such as injury, cleft lip, acne scarring on the patients who previously had good hair growth, can be affected. It can also be due to some injury or illness
- Proper Shaping of beard & moustache hair: Occasionally, some patients, may seek HT for proper shaping, particularly those who are in entertainment industry.
Good candidates are those who are in good mental and physical health.
How is beard/moustache transplant done?
Before surgery, the patient is evaluated and endocrinologist opinion taken if hormonal issues are suspected. Once fit for surgery the procedure is planned.
The beard outline is planned and marked in consultation with the patient. There are two areas to be planned for: the frontal area which includes the moustache and goatee, and the lateral area which includes the sideburn, jawline and cheeks.
The procedure is then done by FUT or FUE and the patient goes home the same day.
What are the challenges of moustache and beard transplant?
Facial hair transplant is much tougher than scalp transplant for many reasons
- The recipient holes need to be made in an artistic manner, keeping in mind the angle of exit of the hair, which is different from the scalp
- Only single hair grafts should be used on the face. These have to be selectively harvested which increases the duration of surgery
- The face is a mobile area, and hence more difficult to implant in compared to the scalp
- Density required is higher, and more grafts are needed. In order to give a good density for the beard, more than one session might be needed. Hence patient should be prepared for this
- Soon after Hair Transplant, a cover is needed- hence, you may not be able to go to work immediately. So be prepared to take leave from work for a week
- While eating there will be some restriction on hard foods.
Since scalp hair is being used, it may be different in behaviour for a few months- hence trimming may be needed
For all these reasons, beard and moustache transplant is not as straightforward as scalp hair transplant. It is advised to do your research and find experienced surgeons to get the best result
